smell用作及物動詞時,表示“聞到,嗅到”,指聞某人或物以分辨其氣味,也指“聞出”某人或某物的氣味。引申可指“覺察”到某事。接名詞、代詞、動名詞或that/wh-從句作賓語或同源賓語,有時可接以現在分詞充儅補足語的複郃賓語。
smell用作不及物動詞時可表示“有嗅覺”; 也可表示“散發出…的氣味”,作此解時可接as if引導的方式狀語從句。
smell用作系動詞時,具有被動意義,接形容詞作表語。
smell用作感官動詞,表示感受到的結果時,通常不用於進行時。用作動作動詞,強調動作的目的性和動作過程時須用於進行時。smell不可用於現在完成進行時,可用於現在完成時。
